No it’s not St Patricks Day, but I do have green laundry soap. Actually I make it myself and it’s so simple, even a leprechaun* can do it. I have been making my own laundry soap long before I moved off grid, it started out as a desire to make and use something that cost less and worked better than the stuff I could get from the grocery store. I found recipe after recipe on line, some are so complicated that it’s not worth the time or trouble. I settled on a simple recipe and I have been very satisfied with the results...

I've used that recipe for years and LOVE it! Excellent way to save money!

I love the fact that you built your house "in the air" and I can see several advantages for doing so. Can you explain your reasonings?

ReplyDeleteI love that recipe too, simple and it works. :)

Hmmm, the original reason is very simple, my hubby planned on building closer to the ground, he was setting the posts to begin building the house, they were 12 foot 4x4s, he set them 3 feet in the ground, the remainder of the wood was sticking up and he decided not to cut them off but use the height to build in the air, it would give up more room under the house for storage or whatever, and it would be safer from animals, plus the view is spectacular, it was a win-win-win situation. :)
Thank you for the recipe!
ReplyDeleteOne question is that we use liquid detergent here at the farm because our water is so hard ... I'm wondering if you have any hints?
Hog butchering time is coming and my friends and family will have lard for soap soon :) Listen to me, I'm getting all homesteading lol

ReplyDeleteI don't know how hard my water is, I do know it has lots of minerals, it builds up on my water purifier and the pan I use to boil water, so I'd say our water is on the hard side. I have had no problems with my homemade laundry soap, it works just fine, it will not suds up, but that's not what gets your stuff clean. All I can say is try it, if it works for you, keep using it, if it doesn't work for you, then go back to liquid.
I will have to hit up my friends who trap the wild hogs around here for the lard, I don't think anyone else around here uses it, it must get thrown away. I am waiting for my order of lye to come in, I am going to make my first batch of soap, I'll use Crisco for the first one, then I'll get adventurous and try making it out of the jars of leftover fats I've been saving. :)
