The first one i ever saw was when i lived in Austin in the 80's. Was squished on the sidewalk of our apartment complex, was bout the size of a paper plate with it's legs all spreed out.
TexasMan, you would not believe what crawls around out here, including on our (second story) deck! From spiders to snakes, it wouldn't do for a squeamish person to live here. :) . . Seth, ewwww! Squished extra large spider... When I watched the video, all I could think of was "Don't fall!", I have heard that tarantulas have the same blood pressure as humans, I understand if they are dropped from high enough, they explode, with legs flying...
women's clothing, welcome and glad you like the blog. . . Maxwell Power, ohhh, not that crazy, we have a lot of them, they just aren't usually this active, it's the time of the year, they get real active just before winter. That is the first time I know about them crawling on the house. They are big enough to spot easily so walking around outside is no problem, fortunately they prefer being on the ground, it would creep me out big time if they crawled in the trees and could fall out. They are fascinating. . . Frugal Canadian Hermit, I don't know what all they eat, I have never seen one feeding, as far as eating one, I'd have to be pretty hungry to do that. :p I do know that some cultures consider them delicacies and eat them roasted over a fire.
B, we have only found 2 scorpions inside the skycastle, one when we first moved in and one a few months ago, we have tightened the place up quite a bit since then, hopefully we will not find any more creepy crawlies on the inside. I still check my shoes and clothes before I put them on though. :) . . HJ, now that would be a sight, I would be dancing a major jig! :)
Fascinating watching the spider use the screen mesh to hold on to while moving.
ReplyDeleteI thought it had designs on MMB's big toe but it wasn't really interested in that.
Maybe just scouting out the lay of the land. I noticed that you had provide a nice couple of incline boards to help it get from one level to the next!

Wretha,
ReplyDeletethese spiders are a good sign of a healthy environment and are beneficial for your eco system , the ones ya gotta watch out for are the scorpion's ,
They are a different type of threat , They do bite and it hurts.
