One of the things we have to contend with while living in rural areas is wildfires, often there is little information when a wildfire is raging nearby, sometimes the information you do get is second or third hand and becomes exaggerated over time. I found a link to a site that shows active fires in the USA, it gives the locations, size and how contained it is, if you live in an area that is prone to wildfire, this will be a handy link for you.

Yesterday we awoke to smoke from a wildfire nearby, we do have great volunteer firefighters in the area and they seemed to have it under control, then this morning the smoke was worse than ever, it has cleared out quite a bit, but there is still a haze in the air and we can still smell smoke, it appears that the fires are being put out, so no worries about this one, I'm very glad to have this link now, without it, we play phone tag trying to find out what other people know.

A nearby wildfire would certainly be someting I would want to know about asap! I am surprised there is so little information for the residents living in the area of the fire.
ReplyDeleteWe don't have wildfires in this area, thank goodness!
I'll bet that the critters would let you know if the fire headed your way and started getting too close!
ReplyDeleteHope they get them all out pretty soon!
Oooh! That's a scary thing to wake up to - the smell of smoke. I always feel comforted when I see the Hotshots (www.fs.fed.us/fire/people/hotshots) running around the area. I hope you and yours and your high mountain castle are safe and sound through the fire season.
ReplyDeleteI saw a post about that fire on bruces blog, I was wondering if many have CB RADIOS out there or not?
ReplyDeleteI think it would be a great tool to let the locals know on the goings on of the mountain.
I know this is off topic but I was wondering about grains and what you thought of buying large amounts of already ground grains? Like quick oats I have seen in large bags for sale pretty cheep. I think it would be better than buying them in the whole grain state. and what about wheat flour already sifted and ground? I know Id have to make sure there were no additives in the grains but it seems like a better way. But maybe not, thats why Im asking what you think.
Thanks in advance
